Across two nights -- as part of Minnesota Public Radio's 50th Anniversary celebrations -- Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields will sing every. single. song. on his 50 Song Memoir.
Each song in Merritt's musical journey represents a year in the beloved singer-songwriter's life. Sonically wide-ranging, musically adventurous, the songs feature non-fiction lyrics that mix autobiography (bedbugs, Buddhism, buggery) with documentary (hippies, Hollywood, hyperacusis) to create a unique portrait of Merritt's life.
The songs' seven performers will be surrounded by 50 years of artifacts both musical (vintage computers, reel-to-reel tape decks) and decorative (tiki bar, shag carpet, vintage magazines). Each performer will play seven different instruments -- from traditional selections to new inventions. From the cello to the Slinky guitar. From the charango to the Swarmatron.
This can't-miss extravaganza will be directed by the award-winning Jose Zayas, of Love in the Time of Cholera and Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter. Join us!
Note that each performance will be a separate program, so that the whole album will be performed over two nights.
